Text

Joel Marcus is Duke’s Professor Emeritus of New Testament and Christian Origins. His research concerns the Gospels and relations between Judaism and Christianity in the early centuries. [1]

His 2023 study examines Matthew’s sayings that answer inherited law with “but I say to you.” In some cases he favours revision of the biblical rule itself and questions the assumption that talion always softened an earlier penalty. This is his attributed interpretation. [2]
