Entity
Yom Kippur / Day of Atonement
A reference page linking a name, group, or concept to the materials that discuss it.
Jewish observance whose Leviticus 16 setting involves sanctuary purification and the sent-away goat; distinguish ancient instructions from later practice and interpretation.
Text
Leviticus 16:29–34 links the rite with the tenth of the seventh month, self-affliction and abstention from work. The chapter distinguishes slaughtered and living sent-away goats; Mishnah Yoma4:2 and6:6 describe the crimson strip and cliff. Different witness dates prevent assigning all details to the oldest text. The accompanying Hunt painting is later reception, not archaeological documentation. [1][9][10][13][14]
