Text

Hagar is an Egyptian woman in Sarah and Abraham's household in Genesis. Chapter 16 calls her Sarah's servant and recounts her pregnancy, flight amid conflict with Sarah, and Ishmael's birth. Chapter 21 narrates her departure with her son, their lack of water in the wilderness and their survival. [1][2]

This background helps explain Ishmael's place in later interpretation of the sacrifice, while Genesis 22 names Isaac in the test. Camille Corot's 1835 painting depicts Hagar in the wilderness as later artistic reception, not a historical portrait. [3]
