Text

Mari is a city and kingdom, not the name of a people. Its remains lie at Tell Hariri on the Euphrates in eastern Syria. Its palace tablets illuminate political, social and religious life, especially in the eighteenth century BCE. The evidence from personal names and from official cult records must be distinguished.
