Text

A common noun names a class or category. In studying divine names, the distinction matters: a word meaning “god” need not identify a particular deity. An occurrence in a personal name must therefore be interpreted from its linguistic and historical context, rather than automatically assigned to El of UgaritUgaritAncient city and kingdom at Ras Shamra on the Syrian coast, flourishing between the fourteenth and early twelfth centuries BCE and preserving multilingual archives.Glossary · Click to read the explanation.
