Text

Derbent lies on the western Caspian coast, at a passage between the sea and the Caucasus slopes, in Dagestan within modern Russia. UNESCO describes its historic fortification system as Sasanian, dating to the fifth and sixth centuries CE. [1]

Later interpreters associated the city with Alexander's gates or Gog and MagogGog and MagogNames with different roles in genealogies, invasion prophecy, end-time nations and barrier traditions.Glossary · Click to read the explanation's barrier. Its walls document a real defended pass, not the identity of the Quranic barrier or construction by Alexander. A modern wall photograph provides geographical context with that qualification.
